How can I keep predators away from my birdbox?
Choose a safe location
-
Place the birdbox away from dense shrubs or branches that predators can climb.
-
Mount it on a smooth, sturdy pole or tree trunk at least 2–3 meters (6–10 feet) above the ground.
2. Use predator guards
-
Metal entrance plates: Fix a metal plate around the hole to prevent woodpeckers and squirrels from enlarging it.
-
Thorny clippings: Place barbed wire, gorse, or rose clippings above and below the box to deter mammals like cats, rats, and weasels.
3. Avoid easy access
-
Ensure poles or posts are smooth and free from nearby climbing aids.
-
Keep nearby trees trimmed so predators can’t jump onto the box.
4. Consider commercial deterrents
-
Some products, like squirrel baffles or chemical repellents, can further reduce predation.
5. Monitor and maintain
-
Regularly check the box for signs of predator activity or damage.
-
Clean and maintain it between nesting seasons to keep birds safe.
